The ACA requires the federal government to establish new national data requirements. States will need to update their policies and procedures to align with the requirements. That alignment may enhance a state’s ability to use data to improve performance.

    *Milestone details:

*Full name: Update state policies and procedures to comply with federal data reporting requirements.

    *Relevance to the ACA:

The ACA requires HHS to establish new national standards, protocols, and operating rules to reduce administrative burden, as well as increase the uniformity and thus the usefulness of collected data. States will need to align their policies and procedures to the new federal standards, which include:

§1104 – Creates uniform standards and operating rules for the electronic transactions that occur between providers and health plans that are governed under HIPAA.

§1561 – Develops standards and protocols to promote the interoperability of systems for enrollment.

§10109 – Authorizes the creation of uniform standards for financial and administrative health care transactions, not already named under HIPAA.

§10305 – Requires public reporting of performance information.
